Animated Widgets on iPhone: What Actually Moves?
Understand the difference between static widgets, animated updates and Aquarium Widgets' swimming fish before choosing a Home Screen setup.
“Animated widget” can mean different things on iPhone. Some widgets change when their data updates; others use supported visual effects to show motion. An aquarium widget may show swimming fish, but that does not mean every widget can play an unrestricted, always-running video. Check the actual app and device behavior before expecting a particular animation style.
What Apple’s widget system supports
WidgetKit widgets present glanceable content on the Home Screen. Apple’s developer documentation on widget animation ↗ explains that data updates can animate with default or chosen SwiftUI effects, and that these animations have a maximum duration of two seconds. Behavior can vary by operating-system version. Apple also documents widgets that let you interact with app functions directly.
This is why a changing calendar, a countdown and a decorative aquarium can all be called “live” or “animated” in marketing while behaving differently. The words alone do not tell you how often content changes or what happens when the phone is locked.

How to add an aquarium widget
- Install Aquarium Widgets and create a tank in the app.
- Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Search for Aquarium Widgets, select an available size and tap Add Widget.
- Move the widget to a spot that works with your wallpaper and tap Done.
